U.S. Expat Filing Deadline (June 17): What You Need to Know

  • 1 min read

If you live abroad, June 17 is your tax deadline. U.S. citizens and green card holders must file a return every year, no matter where they live. Here’s what expats need to know:

Automatic Extension

Expats get an automatic two-month extension (from April 15 to June 17), but taxes owed were still due in April.

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE)

If you qualify, you may exclude up to $126,500 (for 2024, indexed annually) of foreign earned income.

Foreign Tax Credit (FTC)

Alternatively, you can offset U.S. taxes with foreign taxes paid.

FBAR & FATCA

Don’t forget reporting requirements for foreign bank accounts and assets.

Expat taxes are complex, but you don’t need to handle them alone. Be Well & Co. specializes in helping U.S. expats stay compliant while maximizing exclusions and credits.
